Flexible String Pattern Library Recorded Across Two Acoustically Isolated Stages
Vienna Symphonic Library has launched Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato), the sixth installment in their Duality Strings series. The library focuses specifically on creating string ostinatos with what the company describes as unprecedented flexibility for pattern creation.
Dual-Stage Recording Approach
The library features two acoustically isolated string ensembles performing simultaneously at Vienna Synchron Stage. A larger 52-piece ensemble was recorded on the cinematic Stage A, while a smaller 27-piece group was captured in the drier Stage B environment. Users can seamlessly blend both ensembles to achieve different tonal characters.
Both ensembles performed extensive ostinato passages together in perfect synchronization. Individual notes were then extracted from these recordings and are reassembled in real-time by the Vienna Synchron Player, providing authentic transitions and natural variation.
Core Design Philosophy
Rather than offering pre-recorded fixed patterns, the library provides individual notes that allow users to create their own rhythms, tempos, and musical contours. The system includes short notes, long notes, and expressive legatos, extending beyond traditional ostinatos to enable both driving rhythmic passages and lyrical string lines.
Articulations and Performance Features
The library includes spiccato with upbow and downbow variations, détaché in short and long forms, and velocity-controlled combinations. Sequence articulations provide patterns of two to four tones, such as upbow-upbow-downbow combinations.
For existing Duality Strings users, ostinato presets are available that combine ostinato techniques with basic regular articulations from the standard library.
Technical Specifications
The Standard Library requires 20 GB of storage space with 196,656 samples, while the Full Library needs 39 GB with 360,536 samples. Multiple microphone positions are available, including solo, mid, ribbon, and various room configurations for Stage A, plus dark and bright microphone options for Stage B.
Pricing and Availability
Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato) is available in Standard edition for €199 (reduced from €249) and Full edition for €299 (reduced from €389). The library requires Windows 10 or macOS 11 minimum, with 16 GB RAM recommended.
