Eight-Year Development Yields Transparent Reverb Algorithms with Flexible Echo Processing
Valhalla DSP has released ValhallaFutureVerb, a new reverb plugin featuring eight original reverb modes and 12 echo modes. The plugin represents eight years of research into algorithmic reverb design.
Reverb Architecture
FutureVerb includes eight reverb algorithms ranging from small rooms to expansive ambient spaces. The modes cover Room, Chamber, Plate, Hall, Cathedral, Space, Frozen, and Nonlin configurations. Each algorithm was designed to operate effectively without modulation, though the plugin includes modulation options.
The reverb modes progress from smaller acoustic spaces to larger environments. The first five algorithms focus on real-world acoustic modeling, while the remaining three target ambient processing and nonlinear effects. The Frozen mode creates sustained reverb tails that can extend for several seconds, while the Nonlin mode provides gated reverb effects from tens of milliseconds up to one second.
Echo Section
The plugin features 12 echo modes that can function as predelays or post-reverb processing. Options include Modern (clean delay with sinusoidal modulation), Tape (warm overdrive with chaotic modulation), Digital (companded 12-bit delay), Analog (bucket brigade modeling), and Detune (parallel detuned delays).
Additional modes include Reverse, ReverseOctUp, ReverseOctDown, and ReverseOctUpDown for granular delay processing. The Sparkle mode uses long-grain pitch shifting for shimmer effects, while Swarm creates dissonant pitch clusters. LoFi adds overdrive, low-frequency drift, and flutter for vintage tape characteristics.
Color Modes
Four color profiles adjust the plugin's frequency response and visual appearance. Bright mode allows extended high-frequency decay. Neutral mode limits high-frequency decay to match real acoustic spaces. Dark mode applies an 8 kHz lowpass filter, while Studio mode combines a 10 kHz high-cut with a 600 Hz low-cut filter.
Technical Details
ValhallaFutureVerb is available for $50 USD. The plugin supports VST2.4, VST3, AAX, and AU formats in 64-bit on both Windows and Mac platforms. Mac compatibility includes Intel and Apple Silicon processors (M1 through M5) running macOS 10.9 through Sequoia.
