Bitcrusher with Integrated Spring Reverb for Retro Textures
Safari Pedals has released Pixel Cat, a bitcrusher plugin combining lo-fi digital degradation with spring reverb. The plugin processes audio through bit depth and sample rate reduction before adding spring-style ambience.
Processing Features
Pixel Cat features adjustable bit depth for digital crunch and noise characteristics, along with sample rate reduction for aliasing effects. A spring reverb section provides ambience ranging from short slap to longer washes. Drive adds saturation before the crushing stage, while a tone control filters the processed signal.
A blend control mixes the crushed signal with dry input for parallel processing. Auto gain helps maintain consistent levels during parameter adjustments. Input and output gain controls on side sliders enable gain staging.
Applications
According to the developer, the plugin is designed for drums, synths, guitars, and vocals. The processing ranges from subtle texture to extreme degradation, suitable for both lo-fi aesthetic and creative sound design.
Technical Specifications
Pixel Cat supports VST3, AU, and AAX formats on macOS 10.15 or later and Windows 8 or later (64-bit). The plugin requires a 1 GHz dual-core processor (or better) and 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB recommended). First launch requires sign-in for activation, with offline operation available afterward.
Pixel Cat is available for $9.99 during the current sale (regular price $49) and is included in the Safari Pedals All Access Pass subscription. A demo version is available. More information is available on the Safari Pedals website.
