Omnichord-Inspired Interface Separates Note Selection from Rhythm Performance
Gulf Coast Synthesis has released Strum Plate, a free MIDI effect plugin that transforms standard keyboard playing into an Omnichord-like strumming experience. The plugin decouples chord input from rhythm performance, allowing users to hold chords and trigger notes through mouse or pitch wheel control.
Core Performance Concept
Strum Plate operates on a two-stage performance model where users first press chord combinations on a MIDI keyboard without generating sound. The notes are stored in a buffer until activated through the plugin's interface. Users then "strum" an on-screen gold plate with mouse movements or pitch wheel control to trigger the stored chord notes in real-time.
The mod wheel provides dynamic control over note length, ranging from tight plucks to sustained tones. An octave range feature can transform simple triads into expanded harp-like runs across multiple octaves.
DAW Integration and Setup
As a MIDI effect rather than an audio generator, Strum Plate requires specific routing in different digital audio workstations. In Pro Tools 2024 and newer, users load the plugin in the first insert slot followed by a virtual instrument in the second slot.
Logic Pro users place Strum Plate in the dedicated MIDI FX slot above the standard instrument location. Ableton Live requires a two-track setup with routing from the MIDI track containing Strum Plate to the instrument track.
Standalone Application for Legacy Support
Gulf Coast Synthesis provides a standalone Mac application for GarageBand and older DAW versions lacking MIDI effect support. This approach uses virtual MIDI ports created through Mac's Audio MIDI Setup utility to route performance data between the standalone application and the host DAW.
The setup process involves creating a virtual port through the IAC Driver, configuring the standalone app's input and output routing, and setting the DAW track to receive from the virtual port.
Compatibility and Availability
Strum Plate supports VST3, AU, and AAX formats on both macOS and Windows platforms. The plugin is offered as a free download without email registration requirements.
Gulf Coast Synthesis notes that the plugin pairs well with their GCS Spectral Synthesizer and other piano libraries and synthesizers for adding organic, human-like performance characteristics.
