Vintage Drum Machine Emulation Combines Best of Korg KR-55A and KR-55B

Cherry Audio has released KR-55C, a software emulation that combines the best elements of Korg's classic KR-55A and KR-55B "Rhythm 55" drum machines. This virtual instrument delivers 240 factory patterns from both original models plus 200 new patterns covering additional genres.
Authentic Analog Sound
Unlike sample-based instruments, Cherry Audio has modeled the Rhythm 55's distinctive analog tones. The original KR-55 produced warm percussion with soft yet punchy kicks, sharp mid-range snares, and characteristic analog noise-based hi-hats and cymbals.
Historical Context
Introduced in 1979, the Korg Rhythm 55 succeeded the Mini Pops series (notably the Mini Pops 7 used on Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygen). The KR-55 offered 48 preset rhythms with no user programming, while the 1982 KR-55B expanded to 96 presets with improved sounds. These machines were embraced by artists including Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, and Joe Jackson ("Steppin' Out").

Modern Features
KR-55C enhances the original concept with:
- X0X-style 16-button step programming interface
- Extensive sound editing with tuning and EQ per instrument
- Song mode for chaining up to 99 patterns
- Complete mixer with panning, mute/solo functions
- Professional effects including overdrive, flanger/chorus, delay, and reverb
- Master bus compression and limiting
- DAW integration with auto-sync and drag-and-drop MIDI export
The KR-55C is available for $49.00 in AU, VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone formats, with a free 30-day demo available.
