Ampex 351 Preamp Emulation for Analog Warmth and Saturation
Audio Hertz has released AM.pre, a plugin emulation of the Ampex 351 tube preamp. The plugin recreates the amplifier stage from Ampex's 1950s tape machines, which became a standalone preamp used in professional studios.
Ampex 351 Heritage
The Ampex 351 originated as the electronics inside Ampex tape machines, built with high-voltage tube stages and large transformers. Engineers removed these modules from tape decks and repurposed them as preamps. The 351's transformers add weight and body, while the tube stages provide smooth warmth at lower levels and musical drive when pushed harder.
Processing and Control
AM.pre features dynamic gain staging that responds to input like analog hardware. The plugin includes an auto gain function to maintain consistent output levels while adjusting the gain control. The interface provides direct access to controls without nested menus.
The plugin adds harmonic saturation ranging from subtle warmth to fuller tube breakup. According to the developer, the processing includes smooth high frequencies, thick low end, and natural glue across different source material.
Technical Specifications
AM.pre supports VST3, AU, and AAX formats on Windows 10+ (64-bit) and macOS 10.11+ (64-bit), including Apple Silicon. No iLok authorization is required. The plugin works with major DAWs including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Studio One, and Reaper.
AM.pre is available for $19.00 during the current sale and was developed in collaboration with audiosingularity. A free trial is available. More information is available on the Audio Hertz website.
