Free Orchestral Library Expands with Steinway Model D Grand Piano
Spitfire Audio has updated BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover with a new piano instrument. The free orchestral library now includes 34 instruments recorded at Maida Vale Studios, the historic home of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Piano Addition
The update adds a Steinway Model D grand piano captured in Maida Vale Studio One. The instrument uses the same recording process and acoustics as the full orchestra, maintaining consistency across the entire library. Users can access the piano through the existing Discover plugin without additional cost.
Library Contents
BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover provides 47 articulations across strings, woodwinds, brass, and now piano sections. The library includes basic performance techniques such as long notes, staccato, pizzicato, and tremolo for string sections. Woodwind and brass sections feature long and staccato articulations across multiple instrument groups.
The entire library occupies 240MB of disk space and operates through a dedicated plugin supporting VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. The interface includes NKS compatibility and was developed with design agency ustwo.

Version Compatibility
The three-edition system—Discover, Core, and Professional—uses mode switching technology for file sharing between users. Composers can start projects in Discover and upgrade to higher editions for additional signals and sampling depth. Owners of Core and Professional editions receive Discover automatically.
System Requirements
The plugin requires Mac OS X 10.15 to OS 13 or Windows 10/11. Minimum specifications include a 2.8GHz quad-core processor and 8GB RAM. Both Intel and Apple Silicon processors are supported.
BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover remains free and includes templates for major DAWs. More information is available on the Spitfire Audio website.
