Historic Electronic Sound Design Reborn with Modern Technology

Spitfire Audio Unveils BBC Radiophonic Workshop Library - AUDIO PLUGIN NEWS

Spitfire Audio has released the BBC Radiophonic Workshop library, capturing the innovative sonic legacy of the legendary BBC studio that created iconic sounds for Doctor Who, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and countless other BBC productions spanning four decades.

A Living Archive

The library combines meticulously sampled vintage synthesizers, tape loops, and archival recordings with new performances by workshop members. Sound designer Mark Ayres, who has worked extensively with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop archive, supervised the sampling process alongside surviving workshop members.

Comprehensive Sound Collection

The library features the workshop's cherished EMS VCS 3 synthesizer, the famous lampshade choir sampled by Delia Derbyshire, skeleton guitar, and an extensive collection of tape loops. Notable instruments include the Roland System 100, EMS Vocoder, and ARP Odyssey synthesizer, all processed through various signal chains including vintage EMT turntables, Rogers speakers, and plate reverbs.

Modern Interface

Powered by Spitfire's SOLAR engine, the library allows users to manipulate these historical audio elements through contemporary processing techniques. The interface provides extensive control over sound shaping, with multiple signal paths and onboard effects for creative sound design.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop library requires the free Spitfire Audio App and is compatible with major DAWs. Regular price: $199.00 (Sale price: $159.00)
