Spitfire Audio has unveiled Ultra Soft Piano, a meticulously crafted virtual instrument that builds upon the success of their widely acclaimed Soft Piano. This new release captures the intimate warmth of a double-felted Yamaha U1 upright piano recorded at Baltic Studios in East London.
Innovative Recording Techniques
The instrument was recorded using a sophisticated microphone array including Neumann U67s, Coles 4038s, and U87s, creating a close and intimate sound signature. The unique double-felting approach combines an ultra-thin fabric typically used in jacket linings with the piano's built-in soft pedal felt, resulting in a distinctively warm and immediate tone.
Inspired by Home and Hearth
Ultra Soft Piano draws inspiration from the familiar comfort of home pianos—those found in living rooms and family spaces. The focus wasn't on achieving technical perfection, but rather on capturing the authentic character and warmth that makes each piano unique.
Studio Environment
The recording took place in Baltic Studios' Studio 2, a mid-sized hall known for its natural reverb characteristics. This environment contributed to the instrument's organic sound quality, making it particularly suitable for indie, pop, and singer-songwriter applications.
